The past-symbolizes, looking at the history of education in China yields revelations of value. If it is the role of historians to record and criticize the incidents that happened in history, it is the role of historical educators to accurately relate those incidents to the next generation. Education history usually aims not only at providing knowledge of what happened in the past to young people who are taught history, but also at helping them to acquire a recognition of the real society where they are actually going to live and act through that knowledge. In an attempt to free oneself from "the nationalist-viewed history" formed in the 20th century, this treatise tries to grasp how the history should be in the 21st century, employing the education history of China as an example.
With this goal, and taking a broad view of things, we should modestly examine the advantages and disadvantages of the historical traditions that are different from that of our own country and then promote mutual understanding between others and us.
The purpose of teaching about education in China's past is to build historical thinking, to comprehend the rules of social development and to acquire a basic knowledge about historical materialism and dialectic, through understanding the historical process of world formation and through investigating the relations of the countries in the world from various points of view. Since the 1980's, it has been very important to identify and teach the history of one's own country, which is apt to be taken too narrowly, and efforts for that end have been made, by adopting a somewhat broad overview of world history.
Looking back on the development of education in China, I try to analyze how the Chinese people recognize or become aware of history. I put this into practice by researching today's situation; periodization of world and Chinese history; the curriculum; the purposes and expectations; the system of the textbooks used; and the relationship between Japan and China described the textbooks. Through those studies, we can witness a part of the education circumstances in the long and proud history of China.
When we try to achieve mutual understanding among countries and peoples, we can appreciate other traditions which differ from that of our own. We can also search for others' merits and demerits in a modest way, and not take an interest only in the historical tradition of our own country.
