For the purpose of increasing electric power supply reliability in the distribution systems, high reliable voltage and current sensors for power distribution line must be needed. A strong demand for employing an optical voltage and current sensors in the distribution systems has recently increased because of an excellent electrical noise suppressing and good electrical insulation abilities. The authors have already reported the phase sequence voltage sensor system which consisted of the transverse type of Bi12 Geo20 (BGO) Pockels cell coupled as capacitor in series with an air gap. In this work, by using Pockels' and Faradays' effects of BGO single crystal, the characteristics of optical sensors for measurement of voltage and current on power distribution line have been investigated by using various sized BGO Pockels cells. The BGO crystal is readily available for voltage and current sensors with regard to their sensitivity and temperature stability. The optical voltage sensors system for power distribution line fundamentally consists of the transverse type of Pockels cell coupled as capacitors in the series with an insulator and an air gap. As a result, it was found that by inserting an insulator in the series between Pockels cell and an air gap, an insulator acted on suppressing corona discharge occurring at the edges of Pockels cell. The effect of inserting an insulator resulted in improving the sensitivity of optical voltage sensor. Also, as a result, it was found that the current sensor could be applied for measuring the current in principle. |
